The building was constructed in 1888 by Sandbrook Brothers of Sydney and designed by the Sydney architect Mark Day. It was originally designed for the local civic leader Alexander Malcolm. It was housed in the Royal Arcade in 1890. It was also connected to the rest of the world via telegraph during this time.
